We are all very very sad in Paris... we knew Mister Sasaki was in bad condition, but we considered him as an immortal personality ...
He means a lot for me. I know him from 1984, my first tour in Japan with Paris Opera Ballet School. He is like our Japanese dad! I was only corps de ballet when he invited me at the World Ballet Festival for the first time. He had a great and large vision to mix young talented generation and more maturated personalities...
He had a huge talent to feel the new talented choreographers and the pertinent companies... He had the good balance between discipline and fantasy. I miss him very much!
NBS company must feel very "orphaning"
I wish you a lot of courage for the future.
As I will dance in Hanoi, It won't be possible for me to be in Tokyo on 12th of June for the ceremony, but I will think about him very much...
Regards
Agnes Letestu

It is with great pain that I received the very sad news about the loss of our beloved and highly esteemed Sasaki-san, whose name will forever remain associated with the promotion of culture in Japan on the highest artistic level!
In addition to his devotional activities for the Tokyo Ballet, whose founder and patron he was, he served the musical arts in a unique way, regularly bringing all the greatest opera companies to Japan - the Metropolitan Opera, London's Covent Garden, La Scala Milan, Wiener Staatsoper and many more.
The tour of La Scala di Milano with Otello under Kleiber and Domingo, as well as Verdi's Requiem with Abbado will forever remain unforgettable to me.
Sasaki-san's passing is a great loss for our entire world of music!
He leaves behind the memory of a wonderfully warm-hearted person for whom the artistic side was always strongly associated with the human side.
Dearest Sasaki-san, we will forever miss you and always think of you with love and gratitude! May you rest in the great light which has always been in your heart!
Yours
Anna Tomowa-Sintow

I had a deep respect for Tadatsugu Sasaki, and we used to work often together when I was Administrator of danse at the Paris Opera Ballet, I do remember in particular the wonderful performances of Maurice Bejart Beethoven 9th Symphony we brought in Tokyo. He was also very close to the Orchestre de Paris and received the « Commandeur des Arts et Lettres » medal from our Ministry of culture during one of the Orchestre de Paris tours in Japan. His incredible energy, his deep understanding of artists and his capacity to make impossible things happen will remain forever in our hearts.

I was deeply saddened to receive your email. Mr. Sasaki was a truly legendary person in what he achieved, not only in Tokyo and Japan but across the World with the Tokyo Ballet and by building relationships with so many wonderful opera and ballet companies. He will be sorely missed but I am sure his legacy will live on through the wonderful staff at NBS for many, many more years to come.
I am sure it is a very sad and difficult time for you all and you are very much in my mind. Please do pass on my condolences to Norio and Naoko who, of course, knew him for a very long time and I am sure will miss him sorely.
I have tried to make changes to my plans for the coming weeks to see if I could be with you all on 12 June but I am travelling to America at that time and it just doesn't seem that it can be possible. I will be with you in spirit.
Thinking of you all at this sad time and sending my very best to all of you.

I have known Tadatsugu Sasaki since the 1980s and am very grateful for the many times that he invited me to perform in Japan - as a soloist, with the Orchestre de Paris, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Staatsoper Berlin, the Staatskapelle Berlin and the Teatro alla Scala.
I have wonderful memories of Mr. Sasaki's warm hospitality and his passionate love of music. He always made us artists feel at home and lovingly cared for during our visits to Japan. His achievements for musical life in Japan cannot be valued enough. Both through his work with the Tokyo ballet and visiting opera companies, he brought Japan to the world and the world to Japan.
He will be sorely missed.

The Australian Ballet is extremely saddened to hear of the loss of Mr. Sasaki. His influence and love of ballet touched the whole world and together we mourn his passing.
The Australian Ballet enjoyed a long and important relationship with Mr. Sasaki and NBS dating back to the early 1990s when, under the artistic direction of Maina Gielgud, we were invited to tour Japan. The 1992 World Ballet Festival included two of The Australian Ballet's leading Principal dancers, Lisa Pavane and Greg Horsman, and was followed by two full company tours to Japan in 1993 and 1996. On these tours we performed some of our signature repertoire, which included Ms. Gielgud's productions of The Sleeping Beauty and Giselle alongside Sir Kenneth McMillan's Manon and our founding Artistic Director Dame Peggy Van Praagh's production of Coppelia. With great delight, The Australian Ballet was again represented at the World Ballet Festival in 2006, this time by Lucinda Dunn and Matthew Lawrence. The full company returned in 2007 with Graeme Murphy's production of Swan Lake and Stanton Welch's The Sleeping Beauty, and again in 2010 with Mr. Murphy's Swan Lake and the international premiere of his Nutcracker: The Story of Clara.
Mr. Sasaki was a great man of the theatre; he staged opera and ballet from around the globe and developed personal relationships with the greatest artists of his time. He built a company of international repute with the Tokyo Ballet and fostered a great love of ballet in Japan; almost singlehandedly making Japan one of the great ballet destinations alongside London, Paris, New York and Moscow where all of the great companies of the world flock to perform.
We feel a great loss at his passing but a great joy of having been a part of Mr. Sasaki's large 'family' of international ballet companies with whom he presented and nurtured. We send our deepest condolences to Mr. Sasaki's family, all at NBS and Tokyo Ballet at this sad time and rejoice in the wonderful legacy that Mr. Sasaki has left for all of us to remember and celebrate.

Sasaki-San's heart used to beat especially for the arts. As long as he could, he visited all guest performances of the Wiener Staatsoper and even if he wasn't present in recent times, one could feel his presence on all of our tours, his great love and devotion to music theatre and especially for the major singers. What also remains unforgettable is his tremendous private hospitality that was reflected, among other things, in his regular repeated invitations to all the participants of the Staatsoper's Japan tours. We will miss Sasaki-San very much!
Dominique Meyer (Direktor der Wiener Staatsoper)

I met Tadatsugu Sasaki for the first time in 1981, during the first and memorable tour of La Scala Theatre's Orchestra in Japan. It was then, with Claudio Abbado, that the idea of founding a Philharmonic Orchestra of La Scala took shape. Today, La Scala's Philharmonic Orchestra celebrates 35 years, during which our relationship, on both human and professional basis, was led with continuity and a profound spirit of collaboration, both in the symphonic and operatic fields. I now keep, and always will, his exemplar commitment - a devotion that bounded tightly live to music - as a treasure in my heart.

It is with great sadness that I read the announcement of Mr. SASAKI's passing.
And it is also a shock because I knew him from such a long time and since then I always remembered him as a person of kindness and great generosity.
But mostly , he was a man with a lot of taste in what ever he did as an Impresario and Director, so I always felt grateful and happy to be part and been chosen as choreographer of Mr. SASAKI's " Tokio Ballets "
I will be mourning and honoring Mr. SASAKI 's memory with all of you on Sunday June 12th.

I would have so much loved to be at you side to honor the memory of this exceptional man, but the "Dance" keeps me at the other end of the world.
I know that Mr. Sasaki would have understood, as he has always been at the service of Art and artists and shared with Maurice Béjart this motto in our artistic milieu: The show must go on".
I often had the pleasure and the privilege, for many years, to be present at fascinating conversations between Mr. Sasaki and Maurice Béjart, in which the acuity of their thought did not prevent the warmth of their relation. I would even say that sometimes a sort of mimicry appeared between these two men yet so different, but with a common denominator: the highest requirement, each one in his own domain, with the impatience which so often goes with it. Mr. Sasaki was certainly an extraordinary and unique impresario for opera and ballet in Japan, a visionary sometimes, but we forget that for many of us occidental dancers, he was a bridge between east and west. In fact, it was thanks to him and to the tours that he organized with NBS for the Béjart's company, that we discovered Japan. We were then immersed in a world, a culture which has been an inspiration for us, an essential food for our development as men and artists. For all this, Mr. Sasaki has all my gratitude. His disappearance affects us all.
I would like to assure Norio Takahashi of my entire support as well as to all his staff. This tie of friendship between NBS and the Béjart Ballet Lausanne, initiated by Mr. Sasaki and Maurice Béjart, must lead us to follow their example and guide us for the future.

I was deeply saddened to hear the sad news of the death of my dear friend Tadatsugu Sasaki. Please allow me to express my heartfelt, deepest sympathy and condolences to his Family, Norio Takahashi and all his friends at the NBS Japan Performing Arts Foundation and The Tokyo Ballet.
It was a great privilege for me to know him and to be invited by him to sing in Japan, on in numerous occasions with the great Opera Companies of Europe such as The Wiener State Opera, The Munich Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Hamburg State Opera, The Metropolitan New York and also for Concerts with my dear friend and colleague Jochen Kowalski.
I was greatly honored to be invited to Sasaki's beautiful home and to meet with him whilst attending performances of his fantastic Tchaikovsky Memorial Tokyo Ballet in the great Opera Houses of Europe.
It was a joy to see how proud and happy the success of his beloved Ballet Company made him. He loved his work and his Artists and we all loved him!! He was an extremely generous man of great integrity. His knowledge, inspiration and genuine love of the Arts enabled him to be responsible for the Culture of Ballet and Opera to become known, accepted and loved by the Japanese people.
Sasaki will always be remembered with gratitude for the wonderful pioneer work that he did for the world of the Arts, which united our Countries through the beauty of Classical Music, Song and Dance. He will truly be missed; but never forgotten. His memory will remain alive in our hearts, with gratitude for all that he has done to unite us and bring joy and happiness into our lives.
I would love to be with you for his "Farewell Ceremony" on June 12th.
All my thoughts and prayers will be with you all on this day.

All the team of les Ballets de Monte-Carlo and myself are deeply sorrowful of the demise of Mr. Tadatsugu Sasaki, founder of NBS/Japan Performing Arts Foundation.
Mr. Sasaki widely contributed to the discovery of the arts in Japan and, particularly as far as we are concerned, of Dance. If Dance is in the heart of the Japanese audience today it is largely thanks to him.
All our thoughts accompany those who surrounded him and we are certain that Mr. Norio Takahashi will continue the work and will know how to keep the spirit of Mr. Sasaki through his own vision as Director of NBS.
With our most sincere condolences to his close collaborators and to his family,
Sincerely

Our Dear Mr. Sasaki has left us with so many wonderful memories!
I will never forget the 1st meeting of my Husband Götz Friedrich and Mr. Sasaki's in Stuttgart's Schlossgarten Holel's breakfast room. They were planning the 1st Project of Götz's RING and other works from the Deutsche Oper Berlin, as Götz noticed Mr. Sasaki's swollen jaw and inquired about it. Mr. Sasaki was too shy to complain...but mentioned his pain! It was an infected tooth...Götz immediately called a Dentist he knew and set up an appointment! Mr. Sasaki's problem disappeared but this neither of them forgot and recalled it often in the next apx 14 years of work and visits together!
We will never forget the gracious care and thoughtfulness given all of us in our visits to Japan. Including my returning invitation to sing at Mr. SASAKI'S BIG BIRTHDAY celebration after the death of my husband in 2000. The success and support of Götz's RING is daily visible on our piano in our Berliner home. A wonderful picture of Götz WITH Mr. Sasaki wearing the Eye patch and carrying the spear of WOTAN...Both Men bathed in huge smiles!!
Mr. Sasaki's intense contributions and joy in sharing his artistic thoughts will be remembered for many, many years to come!
Thank you, Mr. Sasaki, for your so wise Words as to the UPS & DOWNS of the cultured world...."Joy & Sorrow are life's Companions"
Karan Armstrong-Friedrich

Mr. Sasaki will never be forgotten - because he had a beautiful soul, and because of his love for all the arts, especially ballet. With condolences,
Loipa Araujo.
It is with the deepest sadness that I heard that the wonderful Sasaki san is no longer with us. His influence on the ballet scene in Japan cannot be overestimated, both through his company, through the fabulous ballet festivals and through NBS, bringing the best of the best, and educating the audiences to appreciate true quality.
Thank you Sasaki san - you will be hugely missed and never forgotten. Now you have joined your good friend Maurice Bejart and Jorge Donn...
Surely in heaven they are now enjoying an amazing 'Funny Gala'...
All the best to you, to Yukari, Cupid and all at Tokyo Ballet and NBS

It is with deep sadness that I write to you on behalf of Marcelo and myself to express our sincerest condolences on the loss of dear Mr. Sasaki. He was a true Titan in the world of the Arts... not just in Japan, but throughout the world. I think it is safe to compare him to the inestimable Sol Hurok; I know many would agree that Mr. Sasaki single-handedly created a sophisticated Japanese audience for great Opera, Ballet, and Classical Music. As is so rarely the case, he was at the same time a truly remarkable and caring human being as well. I'm sure I speak for all who knew him when I say it was a privilege and an honor to work with him and his team, and to be a part of his circle. The mark he will leave on all of us is truly immeasurable.
We are thinking of the entire NBS and Tokyo Ballet family, and want you to know that you are on our minds and in our hearts during this difficult time.
With much love,
Marcelo Gomes

BRAVO Mr. Sasaki!

Dear NBS and the Tokyo Ballet
The message of Mr. Sasaki's passing is of grave and sad news to all of us at the Royal Danish Ballet!
Mr. Sasaki was for sure a true friend and extraordinary man in his role as a passionate ballet lover. Not only did he present the RDB many times in Japan, but he also took care of many other great and significant dance troupes the world over, so that Japan over the years became an international and coveted place to perform for these massive arts institutions
It is with great sadness that this news reaches us and our hearts and thoughts go to everyone in the organization, that Mr. Sasaki so triumphantly helped build.
Please accept my condolences for your loss, on behalf of everyone in the Royal Danish ballet with my sincerest thoughts.
Nikolaj Hübbe and the RDB

I was so very sad to learn of Sasaki-sensei passing...it must be a great loss for you all, but it is also something that touches everyone who has had a chance to meet him. What an extraordinary person!
My memories of him are most serene and indeed wonderful, as well as vivid, reflecting Mr. Sasaki's personality.
The very first meeting, in Tokyo in early 80's, when he was presenting the World Ballet Festival - it was my first time seeing this extraordinary tour de force, and I was struck by how happy and proud he was, how enthusiastic and enamoured of this unique explosion of dance...DANCE, which Sasaki so much loved and has done so much for!
Many years later I had the honour of being invited by Mr. Sasaki to mount Natalia Makarova's Bayadere for Tokyo Ballet, and could not but fall in love with the Company. Not only the with the wonderful dancers, but with every-
one: the dedication and true love for the Organisation I witnessed is not to be found anywhere. I am certain that this could not be without Mr. Sasaki's love and his belief, his enthusiasm and dedication, but above all his vision!
I was lucky and honoured to be invited to participate twice in the World Ballet Festival, besides several returns to the TB, - so had a chance to actually "live" a little bit, if one can say, this extraordinary dream of a truly extraordinary man.
I so vividly remember Mr. Sasaki's smile at our last meeting, in his unique home filled with beautiful things which were like testaments of his love for arts, for ballet and music...
These two moments - our first, and our last, meetings - will always be with me, memories of an extraordinary man who believed, and achieved, his Dream.
With love and sadness,
Olga Evreinoff

We just wanted to write all of you and let you know that we are thinking of you at this very difficult time.
You must feel so empty, upset and lost without one of the most extraordinary "father figures" in the ballet world. We, more than many other people, understand the nature, scope and magnitude of this loss. We went through this so many years ago when John Cranko suddenly passed away - shortly before our first amazing tour to Japan with Mr. Sasaki. At that time we were all in a terrible state; mourning, grieving, frightened, insecure and still very much in shock. Mr. Sasaki, his associates, staff, dancers and the Japanese people helped us with support, kindness and understanding. We felt loved, cherished, worthwhile and special. We still do. Thanks to you. You all helped us get through.
The company survived, we have toured to Japan regularly ever since and we still feel this incredible bond. We too shall miss Mr. Sasaki. He held a very special place in our hearts and minds. He was like a "Godfather" of the artistic world (not only of our beautiful discipline, but many others as well).
We send all of you our most heartfelt condolences. - We understand -
With admiration, respect, gratitude and love
- As ever - Your

I'm extremely saddened by the loss of Mr. Sasaki.
I vividly remember the first time we met: it was at La Scala Theatre in Milano when I was just 21.
Mr. Sasaki came to see a performance of Sleeping Beauty, where I was dancing the role of the Prince. After the show, he invited me to perform at the World Ballet Festival in Japan.
He trusted me, he believed in me at a time when not even I was fully aware of my potentiality.
He was the one who created a bond between the Japanese audience and me. A bond that is very special to my heart.
And this is the reason why I will always be grateful to Mr. Sasaki.
With all my heart,
Roberto Bolle

Tadatsugu Sasaki was a great man, a man of vision and determination. It was these qualities that became instrumental in his bringing to Japan, for the first time, many great cultural institutions from around the world.
Thanks to this man, the greatest dancers, singers, musicians, orchestras and maestros have been seen and heard throughout Japan over many, many years and all, in turn, have enjoyed the rewards of a new, ever growing, enthusiastic and very loyal Japanese audience.
I consider myself extremely fortunate to have known Mr. Sasaki, firstly as a dancer with The Royal Ballet on the Company's first tour to Japan, then later as the Director of that Company and finally, during my last performances as a member of Sylvie Guillem's company touring many cities in Japan.
With every visit Mr. Sasaki's meticulous attention to the schedules and the care of the artists was faultless and his generous hospitality boundless.
I send my sincerest condolences to the Japan Performing Arts Foundation (N.B.S) and The Tokyo Ballet for the loss of Tadatsugu Sasaki, the founding father of these organizations. I am sure that his remarkable legacy will live on through the loyal and devoted dedication of Mr. Takahashi and the entire N.B.S team.

How sad am I too hear this news of Mr. Sasaki-san passing away. What a great ambassador and pioneer he was to the Art form we all love so much. I had the huge honour and privilege to experience Mr. Sasaki-san at his best. Inspiring, diligent and a master at his craft and above all a true Gentleman. His gracious invitations for the Stuttgart Ballet and myself not just on special occasions, but over and over again throughout our demanding touring schedule always made us feel very special and gave us the sense of importance and true caring. What a true impresario he was from the heart and mind of a great artist in his own right.
We here at the Stuttgart Ballet who were privileged enough to have shared all those unforgettable moments together with him ( many in laughter when he praised the Italian kitchen and said that Japanese food was not his favourite ) will always savour these wonderful moments and bow to him and his greatness.
His legacy lives on, thanks to NBS and all the love and energy you have put into continuing this great venture in the Arts in Japan and Worldwide.
In sorrow and with great admiration,
Tamas Detrich and the Stuttgart Ballet

We of the Wiener Kammer Ensemble wish to express our deepest condolences at the passing of Mr. Tadatsugu Sasaki. Our many tours to Japan to share our music with the Japanese audiences are testament to the wonderful vision that Mr. Sasaki possessed in the founding and maintenance of NBS. We are saddened by the loss of the man whose influence on the development of performing arts in Japan was equaled by his ability to understand the needs of the performers.
We know that his spirit will continue to live on at NBS, and look forward to continuing collaboration with Takahashi-san.
Unfortunately we will not be able to be present at the Farewell Ceremony, but we send our deepest sympathy for your loss.
With very best wishes,

I am deeply saddened by the news of passing of greatly respected Mr. Sasaki. I have had an absolute admiration for this outstanding human being and have so many wonderful memories connected with him.
On the day of his memorial farewell ceremony on June 12th I will be conducting at the Mariinsky a ballet concert which I will dedicate to the memory of Mr. Sasaki. He was a remarkable person, a unique enthusiast-founder of a wonderful company Tokyo-Ballet and NBS.
Everyone who knows him here in Russia and of course the rest of the world highly appreciated his gigantic input into the development of international music scene. All the astonishing ballet and opera achievements were greatly presented and highlighted in festivals, concerts and other projects of NBS. These would not be possible without Mr. Sasaki's talented programming.
With utmost respect, love and sorrow,

When I look back at the last quarter of a century of my life on stage, there are a few individuals who have played an enormous part in my growth as a human being and an as artist.
Undoubtedly, at the very forefront is Mr. Tadatsugu Sasaki, whose life we celebrate and whose passing we mourn so deeply.
We first met in 1994 in Vienna. Mr. Sasaki was at the attendance of my performance at the Opera House the night before and he wanted to meet the next day. We met at the Pension Schneider which was his favorite hotel in Vienna. From the very first moment, I felt an incredible warmth coming from this small in frame, but large in spirit man. He radiated an incredible personal charm and the smile in the corners of his eyes was so warm that I felt right away that I can trust him completely. And I did so in entrusting my whole carrier in Japan into his capable hands. All of my numerous engagements in Japan which were to follow after that first meeting in Vienna, were organized by Mr. Sasaki and I will remain forever grateful.
I've met a number of impresarios in my life, but no one has ever had such a deep respect of the artists and such a love of theatre as Mr. Sasaki.
Mr. Sasaki's contribution to the world of Opera, Music and Ballet in Japan and in the world in general is of enormous proportions and his influence in bringing Western Art to Japan cannot be measured in words. He singlehandedly changed the perception of the Japanese audiences towards Western musical art forms, creating millions of fans and devoted theatregoers. It might take another generation before we are to ascertain his input into the world of Performing Arts in Japan.
We lived through some of my most memorable performances together and I will always cherish these memories.
I cannot put into words how much I will miss him. From the bottom of my heart, I say "Thank You." REST IN PEACE, our beloved Sasaki-san...

My wife and I send greetings all of you present at this very sad meeting. Our friend Tadatsugu Sasaki was one of the most enthusiastic, fun-loving but also extremely professional impresarios that I have ever come across.
His love for his ballet combined with his great friendship for me and my opera houses in Florence and Munich and my orchestra in Israel made me impatient to visit your great country and perform for its great public again.
We will all miss him tremendously and I, personally, will also miss the wonderful Indian curry he always made for me... I cannot forget his incredible hospitality in his home on all our visits to Tokyo when he hosted dinner parties of the highest quality.
I wish you all of you who are continuing his work much success his inspired leadership. I am sorry not to be with you all today.
In deep sadness and grief,
