Wiener Staatsoper 2025 Japan Tour
We are more than delighted to announce that the Wiener Staatsoper returns to Japan for the first time since 2016, after an unfortunate postponement of the Company's tour due to the pandemic. The tour opens on Saturday 5 October 2025 at Tokyo Bunka Kaikan.
On their long-awaited Japan tour, the Wiener Staatsoper will bring two of the most iconic productions in their brilliant repertoire. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro will be conducted by Bertrand de Billy in a new production by Barrie Kosky premiered at the Wiener Staatsoper in 2023 to receive critical acclaim. Another production will be Richard Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier in the Company's legendary production by Otto Schenk. It will be conducted by Philippe Jordan. Both operas will be performed by spectacular casts.
Further information will be announced at a later date.

The Tokyo Ballet revives The Kabuki in October 2024 for the first time in 6 years.
The Kabuki was the first ballet that Maurice Béjart choreographed for The Tokyo Ballet, based on a famous Kabuki play titled Kanadehon Chushingura, a story about 47 samurai in the eighteenth century. It was also the first full-length ballet that Béjart created for a ballet company other than his own Ballet du XXe Siècle. According to Béjart's wishes, music was commissioned to Mayuzumi Toshiro, and set and costumes to Nuño Corte-Real.
A strikingly innovative and dynamic fusion of Japanese traditional performing arts and ballet, The Kabuki became one of Béjart's masterpieces and one of the most important works in the Company's repertoire. Since its world premiere in 1986, The Tokyo Ballet have presented 206 performances both in Japan and abroad, at prestigious theaters in 28 cities in 15 countries including the Palais Garnier, Wiener Staatsoper, Teatro alla Scala and Royal Opera House. It was The Kabuki that made The Tokyo Ballet widely known internationally.
