Cast Change: The Royal Opera's Turandot with double casting

Following the first announcement of the cast change in the role of Turandot, we have further discussed with Music Director Antonio Pappano to find the best possible artistic solution for audiences in this situation. The title role will now be sung by two sopranos, Maida Hundeling (on 23 and 26 June) and Ewa Płonka (29 June and 2 July).

We apologise to our valued audience members who have been anticipating the original casting, but appreciate everyone's kind understanding. We hope you will enjoy the performances.

Béjart's striking masterpiece performed in 28 cities in 15 countries

The Kabuki

Ballet in two acts

Choreography Maurice Béjart
Music Toshiro Mayuzumi
Set and Costumes Nuño Corte-Real

photo: Shoko Matsuhashi

The Tokyo Ballet revives The Kabuki in October 2024 for the first time in 6 years.

The Kabuki was the first ballet that Maurice Béjart choreographed for The Tokyo Ballet, based on a famous Kabuki play titled Kanadehon Chushingura, a story about 47 samurai in the eighteenth century. It was also the first full-length ballet that Béjart created for a ballet company other than his own Ballet du XXe Siècle. According to Béjart's wishes, music was commissioned to Mayuzumi Toshiro, and set and costumes to Nuño Corte-Real.

A strikingly innovative and dynamic fusion of Japanese traditional performing arts and ballet, The Kabuki became one of Béjart's masterpieces and one of the most important works in the Company's repertoire. Since its world premiere in 1986, The Tokyo Ballet have presented 206 performances both in Japan and abroad, at prestigious theaters in 28 cities in 15 countries including the Palais Garnier, Wiener Staatsoper, Teatro alla Scala and Royal Opera House. It was The Kabuki that made The Tokyo Ballet widely known internationally.
