The 17th World Ballet Festival: Dates and Artists (July / August 2024)

Japan Performing Arts Foundation (NBS) is delighted to present the 17th World Ballet Festival from Wednesday 31 July to Saturday 10 August 2024 at Tokyo Bunka Kaikan.

When the World Ballet Festival was first introduced in 1976 under the leadership of the late Tadatsugu Sasaki, Founder of Japan Performing Arts Foundation, it was very rare for the star dancers of different companies or countries to share the stage. Its first edition caused an international sensation by bringing together three legends, Margot Fonteyn from the UK, Maya Plisetskaya from the Soviet Union and Alicia Alonso from Cuba.

Since then, held triennially in Japan, it has become one of the most prestigious and largest international ballet festivals. This summer, leading dancers from around the world will gather again to perform a wide array of ballets from classic to contemporary.

Ticket information, programs and more participating artists will be announced as soon as they are confirmed. Date(s) for special performance(s) of a full-length ballet will also be announced at a later date.

The Tokyo Ballet will bring a signature work of John Cranko, Romeo and Juliet, back to stage, following the Company's hugely successful premiere of the ballet in 2022.

The world premiere of John Cranko's Romeo and Juliet in 1962 made him and The Stuttgart Ballet famous worldwide, and it is arguably one of the monumental works among his masterpieces.

The theater-inspired choreography in every way, combined with the majestic sets by the great designer Jürgen Rose, tells Shakespeare's immortal star-crossed love story so vividly that the audiences cannot believe that the dancers are not verbally speaking. The audacious contrast between the aristocrats and commoners and between the two rival families spontaneously evokes the play's theme and the gravity of the young lovers. Every pas de deux of Romeo and Juliet, from the balcony, the secret wedding to the harrowing burial, engraves the breathtaking story on audiences' mind, which will linger a long time.

John Cranko's Romeo and Juliet promises you a profound experience of divine love and art.
