Music Director Antonio Pappano will lead The Royal Opera's Japan tour for the last time

The Royal Opera, under the direction of Oliver Mears and the baton of Antonio Pappano, is one of the world's leading opera companies. Based in the iconic Covent Garden theatre, it is renowned both for its outstanding performances of traditional opera and for commissioning new works by today's leading opera composers.

Following the glorious performances on their last tour, The Royal Opera will return to Japan for the first time since 2019. The longest-serving Music Director in The Royal Opera's history, Antonio Pappano will be conducting spectacular casts in Oliver Mears's darkly elegant production of Verdi's Rigoletto and Andrei Serban's classic staging of Puccini's Turandot.

In Rigoletto, tenor Javier Camarena sings as Duke of Mantua, baritone Étienne Dupuis takes on the title role and soprano Nadine Sierra as Gilda. In Turandot, soprano Sondra Radvanovsky stars as Princess Turandot, opposite tenor Brian Jagde as Calaf and soprano Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha as Liù.

The tour marks Antonio Pappano's final performances in Japan as Music Director of The Royal Opera before he steps down from the position at the end of the 2023/24 Season, after 22 years. The repertoire and casts deliberately curated for the tour will inarguably be a culmination of his musical journey with The Royal Opera, not to be missed.
