Quintessence of Romantic Ballet, Giselle

Giselle

Ballet in two acts

Music Adolphe Adam
Choreography Leonid Lavrovsky after Jean Coralli, Jules Perrot and Maruis Petipa
Adaptation (Pas de huit) Vladimir Vasiliev
Set Design Alexandre Benois

In the pale moonlight, the Willis are dancing with mysterious smiles on their pale faces. They are the spirits of young maidens abandoned by faithless lovers and take revenge in the night by making men dance to death by exhaustion.

Giselle is a masterpiece of classical ballet based on a popular theme of the Willis in Romantic Era. It was a great hit in the 19th century and quickly became one of the most popular ballets to be staged around the world to this day.

The beautiful young peasant girl Giselle falls in love with a young man who turns out to be Duke Albrecht. When she learns that she is deceived by him, she dies of a broken heart and becomes one of the Willis. However, she cannot help protecting Albrecht when he arrives at her grave. The dramatic contrast between the realistic Act 1 and the spiritual Act 2 presents the development in Giselle and captures the ballet fans of all times.

Artistry of both the soloists and corps de ballet of The Tokyo Ballet in Giselle is not to be missed.

Following the performances in June, The Tokyo Ballet will tour to Australia in July for the first time to present Giselle in eleven performances at The Australian Ballet's Melbourne performance home, State Theatre, Arts Center Melbourne, as a guest company to join the celebration of The Australian Ballet's 60th anniversary 2023 season.

What is Choreographic Project?

Artistic Director Yukari Saito started the Project in 2017 aiming at further motivating The Tokyo Ballet's dancers as artists, by stimulating their creativity and developing artistry through their choreographing and performing their own ballets.

This season, The Tokyo Ballet will present their new creations in the Company's studio, which can give a closer look at their choreographies as well as each dancer's every step. A post-performance talk is scheduled on each performance date.

Join us to witness the ever-evolving Choreographic Project.
