The Royal Ballet, acclaimed for its distinctive English style and theatrical ballet tradition, is visiting Japan for the first time in four years!

The Royal Ballet, the UK's largest and most renowned company, is visiting Japan for the first time in four years with a line-up of some of the most prestigious performers on the international dance scene.

Under the directorship of Kevin O'Hare, The Royal Ballet unites grand balletic tradition and an illustrious heritage with innovation, daring and exceptional standards of artistry, creativity and stagecraft to produce supreme theatre. The unique voices of its associated choreographers past and present have defined the development of the art form, and this opportunity to witness the Company's singular style is not to be missed. The outstanding dancers of The Royal Ballet, including many Japanese performers, are celebrated for their dynamism and versatility and are in demand worldwide.

The tour will open at Tokyo Bunka Kaikan on Saturday 24 June 2023 with A Royal Celebration, a mixed programme illustrating the dazzling range of The Royal Ballet's repertoire and the brilliance and versatility of its acclaimed dancers. It will feature founding choreographer Frederick Ashton's masterpiece A Month in the Country and George Balanchine's dazzling "Diamonds" from Jewels. In addition, For Four by The Royal Ballet's Artistic Associate Christopher Wheeldon and Prima, a new work by Valentino Zucchetti, will be performed.

Following the three performances of A Royal Celebration, Kenneth MacMillan's Romeo and Juliet, one of the staple ballets of The Royal Ballet, will be danced with stellar dancers in a different cast each day, over seven performances at Tokyo Bunka Kaikan and one performance at Festival Hall in Osaka. The quintessential dramatic qualities of the Company will be demonstrated in MacMillan's powerful interpretation of William Shakespeare's enduring classic.

Each and every performance is not to be missed.

A Royal Celebration

A Royal Celebration will be an exuberant mixed programme illustrating a dazzling range of The Royal Ballet's signature repertoire in classical, contemporary and heritage works, led by the Company's acclaimed artists and Principal dancers.

A Month in The Country, one of Frederick Ashton's late masterpieces, is a distinctively English style of ballet portraying a poignant exploration of love and longing. For Four was originally created in 2006 by Christopher Wheeldon on four dancers, Angel Corella, Johan Kobborg, Ethan Stiefel and Nikolay Tsiskaridze, for Kings of the Dance, an all-star male ballet spectacular. Prima choreographed by Royal Ballet First Soloist Valentino Zucchetti for four female Principal dancers received its world premiere in 2022. "Diamonds" from Jewels is a classic by American ballet titan George Balanchine.

Romeo and Juliet

Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers encounter passion and tragedy in Kenneth MacMillan's 20th-century masterpiece.

The year 2022 marked the 30th anniversary of the great choreographer Kenneth MacMillan's death, testifying that his works are evergreen. Romeo and Juliet was his first full-length ballet premiered in 1965, and is unarguably one of the monumental works among his masterpieces. His impassioned, naturalistic choreography shows The Royal Ballet at its dramatic finest. The dancers playing the star-crossed lovers have a wealth of opportunity for powerful interpretation, not least in the celebrated pas de deux. Around them, the whole Company creates the colour and action of Renaissance Verona, where a busy market bursts into sword fighting and a family feud leads to tragedy for the Montagues and Capulets. Prokofiev's beautiful score sweeps this dramatic ballet towards its inevitable, emotional end.

Kenneth MacMillan (1929-1992)

Kenneth MacMillan was one of the leading choreographers of his generation. His close association with The Royal Ballet began when he joined Sadler's Wells School (now The Royal Ballet School) aged 15. His ballets are distinguished by their penetrating psychological insight and expressive use of classical language. Among his many great ballets are Manon and Mayerling.
