Royal Ballet Gala: Cast and Programme Changes

We have just learned from The Royal Ballet that Lauren Cuthbertson is regrettably unable to participate in the Royal Ballet Gala as originally planned due to health reasons. We are sorry for any disappointment caused. Changes to the repertory will bring Edward Watson, former Principal of The Royal Ballet, back to the stage where he will perform Wayne McGregor's Infra pas de deux with Sarah Lamb in Programme A. In Programme B he will perform a new solo created especially for this gala by renowned choreographer Arthur Pita. William Bracewell will now be joined in Programme A by First Artist Mariko Sasaki for the Act II (White Swan) pas de deux from Swan Lake. Please see the changes to the programme below.

We apologise to our valued audiences who have been anticipating the appearance of Lauren Cuthbertson, but appreciate everyone's kind understanding. At the same time, we hope you will enjoy the exuberant performances by all the Company's dancers in attendance led by Director Kevin O'Hare, as well as the pre-performance talk by the Director on Sunday 17 July.

  • Act 2 Pas de deux from Swan Lake (Dancers: Mariko Sasaki and William Bracewell) will replace the Black Swan Pas de deux from Swan Lake (Dancers: Lauren Cuthbertson and William Bracewell).

Premiere by Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, Grimaldi Forum Monaco, 28 December 2017

We are pleased to announce that Les Ballet de Monte-Carlo returns to Japan in November 2022 for the first time since 2015, after an unavoidable cancellation in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It will be the Company's eighth tour to Japan. On this occasion, the Company will bring The Taming of the Shrew, choreographed by Jean-Christophe Maillot, based on a quintessential Shakespeare's play. Maillot's sophisticated vocabulary elegantly and powerfully draws the humorous and ironical love story with a serious underlying themethe search for a better half.

Created for the Bolshoi Ballet in 2014, The Taming of the Shrew won three Masques d'Or in 2015: Best Choreographic Show, Best Male Dancer and Best Female Dancer. Three years later, Jean-Christophe Maillot reworked and developed it to the style of his own dancers of Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, with which the Company has toured internationally and won huge success around the world. The collection of music that Maillot has chosen for the ballet is also impressive; most vivid music by Shostakovich including soundtracks and symphonies.

Don't miss the long-awaited Japan premiere of the sparkling masterpiece!

The Company

Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo
― Successor to Diagilev's Ballets Russes has rapidly developed and made Monaco a destination of the world's ballet fans.

Legendary impresario Sergei Diagilev brought his Ballets Russes to Monaco for the first time in 1909. Within two years, he made decision to base his company there, which marked the anchoring of dance in Monaco. After Diagilev's death in 1929, several personalities and choreographers made efforts to revive and continue the company, which however disappeared completely in 1951.

In 1985, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo was born thanks to H.R.H. the prince of Hanover who wished to inherit the legacy and the tradition of les Ballets Russes in the dance tradition in Monaco. The company was directed by Ghislaine Thesmar and Pierre Laccote, then by Jean-Yves Esquerre.

In 1993, H.R.H. the Prince of Hanover nominated Jean-Christophe Maillot as the head of Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo. He has not only created more than 30 ballets for her but also enriches the Company's repertoire by inviting both the major choreographers of our times and emerging choreographers, including Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Shen Wei, Alonzo King, Emio Greco, Chris Haring, Marco Goecke, Lucinda Childs, William Forsythe, Jiri Kylian, Karole Armitage, Maurice Béjart and Marie Chouinard.

In 2000, Maillot created the Moncao Dance Forum, international window to dance that presents an electric fusion of spectacles, exhibitions, workshops and conferences. The Company regularly participates in this festival and the Académie Princess Grace.

In 2011, under the chairmanship of H.R.H the Prince of Hanover, a new structure directed by Jean-Christophe Maillot reunited three institutions: ballet company, Monaco Dance Forum and Académie Princess Grace. Creation, training and production are currently reunited in Monaco to serve choreography in an unprecedented manner in the world of dance.

Grand spectacle of sacred dances and passionate love story of legendary India.

Set in legendary India, La Bayadère is a story of mystery, fate, vengeance and eternal love of Nikiya, a bayadère or temple dancer, and Solor, a noble warrior.

Since its premiere in St. Petersburg in 1877, La Bayadère, one of Marius Petipa's masterpieces, had been regularly performed in the former Soviet Union throughout the 20th century but was almost unknown in the West until 1961 when the touring Kirov Ballet performed the famous "Kingdom of the Shades" scene. Natalia Makarova, who saw the ballet as a child in Leningrad, created her version for American Ballet Theater in 1980.

In 2009, The Tokyo Ballet premiered Makarova's version of La Bayadère. At the premiere, "The Kingdom of the Shades", one of the iconic scenes, depicting the pure love of Nikiya towards Solar amazed Makarova herself who had coached The Tokyo Ballet, and the corps de ballet's stability and the precision in the scene received international acclaim by critics and audiences alike when the Company brought the ballet on overseas tour.

La Bayadère is a feast for the eyes in all facets, with its bravura pieces by the soloists, magnificent group movements as well as sumptuous sets and costumes made by the Teatro alla Scala.

Synopsis

Set in legendary India, Nikiya, a bayadère or temple dancer, and Solor, a noble warrior, have secretly sworn their eternal love. However, Solor finally accepts the Rajah's (King) order to marry his daughter, Gamzatti, for her irresistible beauty and power. Meanwhile, Nikiya rejects the love by the High Brahmin, who became jealous and informs the Rajah of the secret love of Nikiya and Solar. Gamzatti asks Nikiya to give up Solar, but Nikiya refuses. Gamzatti and the Rajah resolve to have Nikiya put to death.

At the wedding ceremony of Solar and Gamzatti, Nikiya in grief is commanded to dance. Gamzatti presents her with a basket of flowers on behalf of Solor. A poisonous snake hidden in the basket bites Nikiya who dies in despair. Solor is distraught and tormented by remorse. In the Kingdom of Shades, the world of dreams, he reunites with Nikiya while the wedding ceremony goes on. Suddenly, the temple and all the celebrants are destroyed by the gods furious against all the betrayals.
