Triple bill with uplifting masterpieces to share HOPE

After the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in 2011, Sylvie Guillem launched an initiative in Paris called HOPE JAPAN to help support the disaster victims and people in Japan. In the fall of the same year when the nation was still suffering in the aftermath, Guillem, with the same aim in mind, did a Japan tour titled HOPE JAPAN with The Tokyo Ballet, visiting cities including the most affected ones in the eastern Japan. She had to include Maurice Béjart's Boléro in the shows because she thought it was "The Power of HOPE". Last year, The Tokyo Ballet resumed the tour in the same spirit to share HOPE with the audiences through ballet in the time of difficulties with COVID-19.

This summer, The Tokyo Ballet brings again an uplifting triple bill composed of Maurice Béjart's two masterpieces, Boléro and 7 danses grecques set to music of the great Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis who sadly passed away in 2021, and the flamboyant classic Paquita. Béjart's positive and evolutional approach to people and lives on earth is probably much needed in these troubled times.

Kenzo Takada (1939-2020)

The logo and visual of "HOPE JAPAN" were created by the late artist and designer Kenzo Takada when Sylvie Guillem launched an initiative named "HOPE JAPAN" after the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in 2011. Kenzo sadly passed away in October 2020, but his office has generously allowed us to use the same logo and visual as a "symbol of recovery".

Performance Dates, Programs and Tickets

Quadruple bill with Maurice Béjart's masterpieces to celebrate the 40th anniversary since The Tokyo Ballet premiered the great master's Boléro.

In 1982, The Tokyo Ballet premiered Boléro, which was the first ever Maurice Béjart's ballet that the Company performed. Since then, The Tokyo Ballet has continued to perform his works both in Japan and beyond, resulting in the enriched repertoire with as many as 22 masterpieces by one of the greatest choreographers in the 20th century.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary since The Tokyo Ballet's first performance of Béjart's ballet, the Company performs the Béjart Gala including one of his three greatest works, L'Oiseau de Feu, for the first time in nine years. Observing the revolutionary element in Stravinsky's score of L'Oiseau de feu, Béjart choreographed the ballet by comparing to the French Resistance.

7 danses grecques is a series of seven beautiful dances set to the music of his friend and the great Greek composer, Mikis Theodorakis who sadly passed away in 2021. Bhakti III is a feverish, mesmerizing dance of Shiva, the God of Destruction of the Hindu Trinity, and his wife, Shakti. Roméo et Juliette, premiered in 1966, is an immortal work in which Béjart speaks up for love and pacifism.

Béjart's ballets full of life and love will surely penetrate and uplift our souls in these troubled times.
