Enjoy Dramatic Spring with The Stuttgart Ballet!
The Stuttgart Ballet, one of the most world-renowned ballet companies particularly for its dramatic ballets, will return to Japan in March 2022 for the first time in three years. On its 12th Japan tour, the Company brings two masterpieces of its repertoire: The Sleeping Beauty, a ballet by Marcia Haydée after Charles Perrault, and Onegin, a ballet by John Cranko based on the verse-novel by Alexander Puschkin.
In the tour final performance, Dorothée Gilbert, Danseuse Étoile of the Paris Opera Ballet, will be a guest artist to perform as Tatiana in Onegin, with Friedemann Vogel in the title role.
The Tour begins on Friday 11 March 2022. Join us for a dramatic Spring with The Stuttgart Ballet!

John Cranko

After having created several important, witty ballets in England, John Cranko was appointed Ballet Director of The Stuttgart Ballet in 1961. He gathered a number of talented dancers and continued to create new ballets for them including Romeo and Juliet, Swan Lake, Onegin, and The Taming of the Shrew. Characterized by his vivid narration of the personalities' nature, psychology and conversations, his creation evoked strong emotions and empathy in the audience. In 1969, Cranko took the company on its first tour to New York, which turned into an overwhelming triumph and was crowned with the term "The Stuttgart Ballet Miracle". He also encouraged young dancers in his company, including John Neumeier, Jiří Kylián and William Forsythe, to try their hand to choreography. John Cranko died unexpectedly at age of 45 on Jun 26, 1973, on a return flight from his successful U.S. tour.

Legendary prima ballerina and principal dancer Marcia Haydée took over the directorship of The Stuttgart Ballet in 1976. She not only broadened the Company's repertoire with works by Hans van Manen and Maurice Béjart, former company members John Neumeier and Jiří Kylián, resident choreographers William Forsythe and Uwe Scholz, but also had great success with her staging of The Sleeping Beauty In 1987.

German designer Jürgen Rose's famous collaboration with John Cranko started in 1962 when he created his first designs of Cranko's Romeo and Juliet. Since then, Rose continued to design most of his works, including Swan Lake, Onegin, Firebird and Traces, Cranko's last work. Since 1972, Rose has also worked with John Neumeier, artistic director of the Hamburg Ballet, on many ballets, including The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty and La Dame aux Camelias.
Rose's extensive work also includes designs for operas for most of the renowned opera houses in Europe.

The Sleeping Beauty
Marcia Haydée The Sleeping Beauty -story of Carabosse

Long before Angelina Jolie appeared as Malificent on the silver screen, Marcia Haydée re-interpreted the role of the "evil" fairy Carabosse in her ground breaking 1987 production of The Sleeping Beauty. With gender-bending choreography and spectacular - and equally ambiguous - costuming by designer Jürgen Rose, Haydée created a tour de force role for dance legend Richard Cragun, a role which to this day fascinates audiences and inevitably steals the show.
Haydée had had many encounters with the Petipa classic long before she created her own production: it was the first ballet she ever saw as a child and she danced in various versions including in Bronislava Nijinska's for the Marquis de Cuevas Ballet, as well as Nicolas Beriozoff's and Rosella Hightower's for the Stuttgart Ballet. When she auditioned for John Cranko in 1961, she danced variations from The Sleeping Beauty for him and gave her debut in Stuttgart in the Bluebird pas de deux. Her extensive knowledge of the work was therefore the solid foundation on which she built her interpretation when she created her own version in 1987 - the very first ballet she ever choreographed. "The Sleeping Beauty for me is the story of Carabosse - whose feelings and pride have been hurt, and who consequently does something malicious - and the Lilac Fairy, who counters this rage and negative energy with positive energy. And I think we all carry aspects of both of them within us. Their struggle is a universal one, one we can all relate to."
Haydée's focus on Carabosse, who is constantly present throughout the ballet, continues until the very end when, just as the wedding of Princess Aurora and Prince Desirée has been celebrated, she re-appears, striding slowly along in front of the panorama of fairy-take characters, a menacing reminder that she has not been banished and will, in time, return.

Onegin
A must for all lovers of dramatic, full-length ballets

John Cranko's Onegin holds a special place in the choreographic repertoire of the second half of the 20th century as one of the few original full-length ballets. Based on Alexander Pushkin's dramatic verse novel „Eugen Onegin", the ballet tells the story of the arrogant and world weary aristocrat Onegin who rejects the love of the naïve country girl Tatiana only to realize - upon meeting her again years later - that in her he threw away the only woman who ever truly loved him and who was ever worth loving. Tatiana, by now matured and married to Prince Gremin, must battle with her emotions when Onegin seeks her out to confess his love. In one of the most heart wrenching scenes in all of classical ballet, Tatiana rejects Onegin although she secretly still loves him.
John Cranko's absolute mastery of the art of the pas de deux finds its climax in Onegin, where each of the three main encounters between Onegin and Tatiana is so skillfully crafted and so superbly nuanced that by the final scene, the audience finds itself hopelessly caught up in the protagonists' emotional turmoil. Set to sweeping music by Peter I. Tschaikovsky, and with lavish sets and costumes evoking 19th century Russia by Juergen Rose, Onegin is a must for all lovers of dramatic, full-length ballets.

Streaming Dates and Tickets
By popular demand from ballet fans in Japan and beyond, the 16th World Ballet Festival held in August 2021 will be available on demand from Monday 20 December 2021 until Monday 10 January 2022. The Festival was held with 23 world-leading dancers from prestigious companies such as the Paris Opera Ballet, The Royal Ballet, The Bolshoi Ballet, Mariinsky Ballet, Béjart Ballet Lausanne, The Stuttgart Ballet, Hamburg Ballet and so on, at Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, with theater capacity limits and severe COVID-19 prevention measures. Even before the Festival started, we had heard from many international fans who were unfortunately not able to attend the performances that they would like to see the streaming, so we decided to film the performances.
On this occasion, we tried to get necessary copyright permissions for as many ballets danced as possible, for choreography, music and others, in order to closely revive the original programs at the Festival. In addition to the performance footage, you can also enjoy exclusive dancers' interviews and behind-the-scenes footages that show how the Festival was made possible under unprecedented circumstances due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It will be a very rare opportunity to watch such a wide repertoire at a time, including the legendary ballet Les Chaise, choreographed by Maurice Béjart in 1981 after Eugène Ionesco, set to Richard Wagner's Tristan und Isolde. It was premiered in Brazil, by Laura Proença and Béjart himself. The ballet was revived in 1994 by Marcia Haydée and John Neumeier at the 7th World Ballet Festival, and was finally revived for the second time by Alessandra Ferri and Gil Roman at this year's Festival.
Ticket sales begin on Friday 19 November 2021. You can watch at any time and as many times as you want during the streaming period.
