The 16th World Ballet Festival: Program Updates and Cast Changes
We are pleased to announce below updates in the
programs A and B to be performed at the 16th World Ballet (Friday 13
- Sunday 22 August).
We also announce that it has become necessary
to make some cast changes. Under the influence of emigration and immigration
restrictions in each country imposed due to COVID-19, David Hallberg, Isaac
Hernández, Sarah Lamb, Tamara Rojo and Diana Vishneva are unable to participate
in the Festival. Due to injury, Marianela Núñez is unable to take part in. However,
we are pleased to inform that Fumi Kaneko (Principal, The Royal Ballet) and
Svetlana Zakharova (Principal, The Bolshoi Ballet, only in Program A) will be
participating.
We apologize to our valued audiences who have
been anticipating the original casting and program, but appreciate everyone's
kind understanding for the unavoidable situation.

Since its foundation, The Tokyo Ballet has developed a wide range of repertoire from classical full-length ballets to masterpieces of contemporary choreographer, and has premiered several original works created by the world leading choreographers such as Maurice Béjart, John Neumeier and Jiří Kylián.
The Tokyo Ballet will present a tantalizing triple bill, in which Japanese leading choreographer Jo Kanamori joins the two choreographic giants, Maurice Béjart and Jiří Kylián, with his new work, KAGUYAHIME, to be created for the Company.
Jo Kanamori moved to Europe at the age of 17 and studied under Maurice Béjart at Rudra Béjart School Lausanne. In 1994, he made his debut as director and choreographer at the Netherlands Dans Theater where Jiří Kylián was the-then Artistic Director. After working with several dance companies in Europe, he returned to Japan and in 2004 established Noism, Japan's first residential dance company of a public art center, RYUTOPIA Niigata City Performing Arts Center.
Having close relationships with the two giants in common, it was only natural for The Tokyo Ballet and Jo Kanamori to be drawn each other to collaborate. Inspired by the oldest Japanese surviving piece of literature "The Tale of Bamboo Cutter", KAGUYAHIME will be a full-length ballet in three acts to be created over the next few years. This year, only the first act will be presented.
Set to pantomime ballet of Béla Bartók and inspired by films of Fritz Lang, Maurice Béjart's Le Mandarin merveilleux portrays the fascinating period between the two world wars.
Jirí Kylián met Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu in 1982 for the first time on a remote island north of Australia, where they were both deeply moved by the experience at the Australian Aboriginal festival. After this mutual, profound experience, Kylián asked Takemitsu to compose a ballet for him, to which Kylián choreographed Dream Time.

"Kaguyahime" or "The Tale of Bamboo Cutter", the oldest Japanese surviving piece of literature, has long been an inspiration to many artists in various fields. Having studied many of their works, Jo Kanamori set to work on his own creation. "As I have heard some of the pieces of Claude Debussy's music, scenes of the ballet naturally came up to my mind" says Kanamori. Act I will depict the beginning of the story from the birth of Kaguyahime until her leaving home to enter the court life.

Inspired by films of German film director Fritz Lang, especially by "M", Maurice Béjart choreographed Le Mandarin Merveilleux to a pantomime ballet of Béla Bartók to portray the slum-inspired universe of the Middle Europe. The ballet gets to the core of eros and folie in the prevailing sexual ambiguity in the underworld, between the two world wars. It was world premiered by the Béjart Ballet Lausanne in 1992, and was premiered by The Tokyo Ballet in 2004.

Dream Time was premiered by the Nederlands Dans Theater in 1982, and by The Tokyo Ballet in 2000. Jirí Kylián commissioned Toru Takemitsu whom he had long admired, to compose a piece of music for his ballet. In 1982, they met for the first time on a remote island north of Australia where they shared a profound experience at a large Aboriginal gathering. The mutual experience became the foundation for Dream Time. Five performers seamlessly dance and communicate across all barriers to the majestic score of Takemitsu to create a universe of flowing elegance.
