The 16th World Ballet Festival: Cancellation of the Gala on Aug. 25

It is with great regret that we announce that the World Ballet Festival Gala scheduled on Wednesday 25 August 2021 has been cancelled. It has become necessary to close the 16th World Ballet Festival on Sunday 22 August due to several reasons.

As the global COVID-19 situation changes every day, so do the entry and quarantine restrictions of each country. In addition, some ballet companies will open the 2021/22 season earlier than usual. As we had consulted with participating dancers, and had learned about their new season schedule and the mandatory quarantine period after international travel, we have had to conclude to close the 16th World Ballet Festival on Sunday 22 August and cancel the Gala. There will be no ticket sales for the Gala. However, we are doing our utmost to make the 16th World Ballet Festival happen with Program A and Program B to keep the flame of its 45-year history alive.

Under the current situation, changes in the cast or programs might become necessary. We would appreciate your kind understanding and continued support.

Performance Dates & Tickets

Get carried away by the pirate adventure.

Le Corsaire

Ballet in three acts with a prologue

Music Adolphe Adam, Cesare Pugni, Léo Delibes, Riccardo Drigo, Peter von Oldenburg
Choreography Anna-Marie Holmes after Marius Petipa and Konstantin Sergeyev
Music re-orchestrated by Kevin Galiè
Sets and Costumes Luisa Spinatelli

Inspired by the poem of the nineteenth-century poet Lord Byron, Le Corsaire is a flamboyant ballet set in the Mediterranean Sea controlled by the Ottoman Empire. It is a story of pirates and slave girls' exciting adventure and romance, packed with virtuoso dancing.

The ballet has seen several revisions throughout its long performance history. The Tokyo Ballet premiered in 2019 the exhilarating production staged by Anna-Marie Holmes with the exuberant sets and costumes of the Teatro alla Scala. The thrilling ballet returns with three different casts. Join us on an adventurous journey!
