Don Quixote choreographed for The Tokyo Ballet by "God of the Dance", Vladimir Vasiliev

Don Quixote is one of Marius Petipa's most popular classics. Set in Spain, the ballet has been loved for its breadth of virtuoso dancing including that of cheerful Seguidille, stylish dance of Toreadors, energetic dance in the gypsy scene, beautiful classical dance by Dyrads and the famously bravura Act III pas de deux.

The Tokyo Ballet's Don Quixote was produced and choreographed by legendary dancer Vladimir Vasiliev, known as the "God of the Dance", after Marius Petipa and Alexander Gorsky. Vasiliev's version was an elaborate fusion of tradition of the Bolshoi Ballet and modernity. The premiere by The Tokyo Ballet in 2001 received considerable critical acclaim, amazing the audience members and critics alike. In 2014, Vasiliev returned to Tokyo and coached the Company to stage Don Quixote again.

In July, The Tokyo Ballet presents three performances of Don Quixote in celebration of the 80th birth anniversary of a living legend, Vladimir Vasiliev.

Vladimir Vasiliev

Russian dancer, choreographer and company director. He was a principal dancer with the Bolshoi Ballet for twenty years and was the Bolshoi's biggest male star. Heroic, dynamic with an unparalleled virtuoso technique and romantic intensity, he was especially acclaimed for leading roles such as in Don Quixote, Spartacus and Romeo and Juliet. He was General and Artistic Director of the Bolshoi Theatre from 1995 to 2000.

Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, under the directorship of Jean-Christophe Maillot, returns to Tokyo in November 2020 for the first time in 5 years. It will be the Company's eighth tour to Japan. On this occasion, the Company will bring The Taming of the Shrew, choreographed by Jean-Christophe Maillot, based on a quintessential Shakespeare's play. Maillot's sophisticated vocabulary elegantly and powerfully draws the humorous and ironical love story with a serious underlying theme--the search for a better half.

Created for the Bolshoi Ballet in 2014, The Taming of the Shrew won three Masques d'Or in 2015: Best Choreographic Show, Best Male Dancer and Best Female Dancer. Three years later, Jean-Christophe Maillot reworked and developed it to the style of his own dancers of Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, with which the Company has toured internationally and won huge success around the world. The collection of music that Maillot has chosen for the ballet is also impressive; most vivid music by Shostakovich including soundtracks and symphonies.

Don't miss the long-awaited Japan premiere of the sparkling masterpiece by Jean-Christophe Maillot and Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo!

The Company

Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo
― Successor to Diagilev's Ballets Russes has rapidly developed and made Monaco a destination of the world's ballet fans.

Legendary impresario Sergei Diagilev brought his Ballets Russes to Monaco for the first time in 1909. Within two years, he made decision to base his company there, which marked the anchoring of dance in Monaco. After Diagilev's death in 1929, several personalities and choreographers made efforts to revive and continue the company, which however disappeared completely in 1951.

In 1985, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo was born thanks to H.R.H. the prince of Hanover who wished to inherit the legacy and the tradition of les Ballets Russes in the dance tradition in Monaco. The company was directed by Ghislaine Thesmar and Pierre Laccote, then by Jean-Yves Esquerre.

In 1993, H.R.H. the Prince of Hanover nominated Jean-Christophe Maillot as the head of Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo. He has not only created more than 30 ballets for her but also enriches the Company's repertoire by inviting both the major choreographers of our times and emerging choreographers, including Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Shen Wei, Alonzo King, Emio Greco, Chris Haring, Marco Goecke, Lucinda Childs, William Forsythe, Jiri Kylian, Karole Armitage, Maurice Béjart and Marie Chouinard.

In 2000, Maillot created the Moncao Dance Forum, international window to dance that presents an electric fusion of spectacles, exhibitions, workshops and conferences. The Company regularly participates in this festival and the Académie Princess Grace.

In 2011, under the chairmanship of H.R.H the Prince of Hanover, a new structure directed by Jean-Christophe Maillot reunited three institutions: ballet company, Monaco Dance Forum and Académie Princess Grace. Creation, training and production are currently reunited in Monaco to serve choreography in an unprecedented manner in the world of dance.
