The changing circumstances surrounding the performing arts bring challenges and difficulties, but it is our mission to continue to invite the prestigious companies not only to enrich Japan's culture but also to promote international cultural exchange.
Travelling abroad to attend opera performances has become easier. However, we believe that opera lovers in Japan as well as those who are travelling to Japan can still enjoy the Festival because it assures them rare opportunities to see the finest productions performed by the world-class opera companies and carefully chosen artists, within such short periods of time, which cannot be easily realized even they go abroad for opera tours. Join us for an intensive, extraordinary operatic journey in Japan.

The Teatro alla Scala has chosen two of the Company's signature works for their 7th tour to Japan in 2020, an Olympic and Paralympic year: Giuseppe Verdi's La traviata and Giacomo Puccini's Tosca.
Riccardo Chailly will lead the Company to Japan for the first time since becoming Music Director of La Scala in 2017. It will also be the first time for Zubin Mehta to appear with the Company in Japan.
Zubin Mehta conducts La traviata in Liliana Cavani's classic 1990 staging. It is a legendary production first brought to Japan in 1995. All of the six performances at the NHK Hall were sold out within hours after the tickets were put on sale. Soprano Marina Rebeka will sing the role of Violetta Valéry, and baritone Leo Nucci will be Giorgio Germont.
Riccardo Chailly will conduct a new production of Tosca to be premiered in December 2019 to open La Scala's new season. It will be directed by Davide Livermore who saw great success of his production of Attila which opened the Company's 2018 season. The title role of Tosca will be sung by Spanish soprano Saioa Hernandez, an emerging star who is casted as one of the two important sopranos to share the title role in the new production, the other being Anna Netrebko who will sing in the production premiere.

In October 2021, the Wiener Staatsoper brings two significant operas which will represent the quality of the Company; Richard Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier and Wolgang Amadeus Mozart's Così fan tutte, conducted by Philippe Jordan who is to become Musical Director of the Wiener Staatsoper and Riccardo Muti respectively.
The Wiener Staatsoper's Der Rosenkavalier has long been associated with Carlos Kleiber as one of the operas in his limited repertoire among the opera lovers. It might be a challenge for the next Musical Director Philippe Jordan to conduct such a legendary opera, but he should bring ambitious, new Der Rosenkavalier together with the entire company with an incomparable tradition, in an exuberant production of Otto Schenk.
Among world-renowned conductors, Riccardo Muti is said to have the trusted relationship with the Wiener Staatsoper. Especially in Mozart's operas, Muti and the Company exhibit an extraordinary musical chemistry, which was witnessed in the unforgettable performances of Le nozze di Figaro on their last tour to Japan in 2016.
On 2021 tour, he conducts Così fan tutte in a co-production by the Wiener Staatsoper and Teatro San Carlo in Naples, directed by Chiara Muti. The same team of father and daughter was seen on the Japan tour of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma in 2018. The production by Chiara Muti was premiered at the Teatro San Carlo in 2018 with critical acclaim, and will be premiered at the Wiener Staatsoper in May 2020, with some revisions. It will be further 'matured' by the time it comes to Japan in 2021.

Sketch for the new production (June 2019)
On Christmas Eve, the party is over and the grand hall in Masha's house is silent. When the clock sticks midnight, the Christmas tree suddenly begins to grow to dizzying heights, and Masha finds herself in a world of dolls, where occurs a battle between an army of toy soldiers and the mice. Masha rescues the Nutcracker Prince bravely fighting, and is invited in reward to the beautiful Land of Snow and the Land of Sweets.
The Nutcracker, a classic set to Tchaikovsky's colorful musical gem, has enjoyed enormous popularity all over the world as a winter treat for family and friends. It is a stream of brilliant dancing, including the beautiful adagio and magical dance in the Land of Snow for Masha and the Nutcracker Prince in Act I, the brilliant character dances and the Grand Pas de deux in Act II.
The Tokyo Ballet has restaged The Nutcracker for the first time in 37 years to celebrate the Company's 55th anniversary. With sets and costumes newly made in Russia, it is restaged by Artistic Director Yukari Saito after Lev Ivanov and Vasily Vaiononen. Join us as we celebrate the 55th anniversary with a sumptuous new production of timeless classic The Nutcracker.
