Elegant, witty and sumptuous performances by The Royal Ballet

The Royal Ballet is one of the great ballet companies of the world, a beacon in the cultural life of Britain and a driving force behind the development of ballet as an artform. Under the leadership of Director Kevin O'Hare, exceptional standards of artistry, creativity and stagecraft come together to produce supreme theatre. Since its foundation in 1931 by Dame Ninette de Valois, The Royal Ballet has developed great English choreographers and a celebrated British style of ballet. Today, attracted by its grand balletic tradition and illustrious heritage, a number of versatile dancers from all over the world join the Company, among whom are several Japanese dancers.

On this occasion, The Royal Ballet presents two programmes, Don Quixote and a gala programme. Carlos Acosta's effervescent production of Don Quixote, Marius Petipa's 19th-century classic, is packed with exhilarating choreography and virtuoso dancing, its warmth and charm matched by the vibrant designs by Tony Award-winner Tim Hatley. The gala programme will showcase the wonderful range of the Company's distinctive repertory and feature the outstanding talents of the Principal dancers on the Japan Tour.

Don Quixote

Carlos Acosta's effervescent production of Don Quixote

Don Quixote

Ballet in three acts

Don Quixote is one of Marius Petipa's much-loved 19th-century classics - its story is drawn from Miguel de Cervantes's classic novel and set to Ludwig Minkus's score. The ballet has long been acclaimed for its virtuoso dancing, beautiful and technically demanding 'vision scene' and the famously bravura and breathtaking Act III pas de deux.

Carlos Acosta's production was created for The Royal Ballet in 2013, and brings the sunshine of Spain and the exuberance of the entire Company to the stage. Acosta created new choreography for the gypsy scene in Act II, and uniquely for this production of Don Quixote added on-stage musicians. Warmth, charm and entertainment abound in this energetic and witty ballet, reflected too in the characterful backdrops of Tim Hatley's vibrant designs.

Don Quixote and his servant Sancho Panza set out to have a chivalrous adventure. They meet Kitri and Basilio, a young couple who cannot marry because Kitri's father is determined to marry her off to the wealthy Gamache. Don Quixote decides to intervene.

With Don Quixote's help, Kitri and Basilio convince her father to let them marry. Don Quixote also persuades Gamache that he would prefer to marry the barmaid anyway. Kitri and Basilio celebrate, and everyone cheers Don Quixote on his way.

Gala programme

Gala with signature works of The Royal Ballet's repertoire

Gala

Winter Dreams (Choreography: Kenneth MacMillan)
The Sleeping Beauty "Rose Adage" (Choreography: Marius Petipa)
Manon - Pas de deux from Act 1 (Choreography: Kenneth MacMillan)
Ondine - Pas de deux (Choreography: Frederick Ashtonn)
Romeo and Juliet - Pas de deux from Act 1 (Choreography: Kenneth MacMillan)
Symphony in C (Choreography: George Balanchine)

The Gala programme will be an exuberant showcase of excerpts from signature works of The Royal Ballet's repertory performed by the Company's roster of acclaimed artists and Principal dancers.

The Sleeping Beauty has long been associated with The Royal Ballet's distinguished Prima Ballerina Assoluta Margot Fonteyn, whose centenary is celebrated this year. Her memory is also enshrined in the ballet Ondine, created for her by the Company's Founding Choreographer Frederick Ashton. The profound impact of Kenneth MacMillan's dramatic creativity is illustrated in the gripping narrative of Manon, Romeo and Juliet and Winter Dreams. The astonishing artistic breadth of The Royal Ballet today will also be demonstrated in George Balanchine's Symphony in C, set to Georges Bizet's Symphony No. 1, which is a dazzling showcase for the entire Company and Principal dancers.

Join us for this euphoric, scintillating Gala!

Margot Fonteyn

Royal Ballet Prima Ballerina Assoluta Margot Fonteyn was an iconic figure in British ballet. With Ninette do Valois and Frederick Ashton, she was instrumental in shaping the Company and was particularly renowned for her performances in the classics and as a muse for Ashton. 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of Margot Fonteyn's birth.

Frederick Ashton

Founding Choreographer of The Royal Ballet Frederick Ashton was one of the most influential figures of the 20th century. In his work with the Company, he developed the distinctive 'English style', and left a vast corpus of works that are regularly performed by The Royal Ballet and companies around the world.

Kenneth MacMillan

Kenneth MacMilan was one of the leading choreographers of his generation. His close association with The Royal Ballet began when he joined Sadler's Wells School (now The Royal Ballet School) aged 15. His ballets are distinguished by their penetrating psychological insight and expressive use of classical language.

Dazzling production of Swan Lake by Vladimir Burmeister

Swan Lake is synonymous with classical ballet. It is a timeless love story of Princess Odette transformed into a white swan during the day and Prince Siegfried who falls in love with her. The ballet is packed with dazzling highlights such as mystical Dances of Swans in the moonlight in Act II and dramatic grand pas de deux in Act III widely known as the 'Black Swan pas de deux' in which Odile, the daughter of an evil witch, seduces Prince Siegfried. A passionate sequence of national dances in Act III including Spanish dance, Neapolitan dance, Hungarian czardas and Polish dance is arguably a signature scene of this monumental, dramatic ballet.

It is a perfect ballet for everyone to see during Golden Week!

Synopsis

Act I

The young Prince is suffocating in the atmosphere of the Royal Court. He hates the palace, he cannot stand the rigors of etiquette, the courtiers' hypocrisy and base flattery.

Act II

When Prince Siegfried was hunting on the lake shore, he met girl-swans among whom was Odette. Siegfried and Odette fell in love with each other. Siegfried swears he will be faithful to her all his life and will save her and her friends from the wicked magician's evil spell.

Act III

Siegfried's mother throws a ball in her castle at which the prince will have to choose a bride. But he is in love with Odette and refuses to make a choice. At that time the wicked magician disguised as Knight Rothbart appears in the castle. With him is his daughter Odile who looks exactly like Odette. Deceived by this likeness Siegfried chooses Odile as his bride. The magician is triumphant.

Act IV

When the prince realizes the mistake he made he hurries to the shore of the lake. He pleads Odette to forgive him, but Odette leaves him. The oath of faithfulness has been violated by Siegfried and Odette cannot get rid of the magician's spell.

The wicked sorcerer decides to kill Siegfried. A terrible storm starts and the lake floods the shore. Odette sees that the prince is threatened by death. She rushes to save him even at the risk of her own life.

Odette and Siegfried triumph, the wicked magician dies, the storm abates. And the white swan becomes the girl Odette.

What is Vladimir Burmeister's Version of Swan Lake?

Vladimir Burmeister was a soviet dancer, choreographer and ballet master. He is best remembered for his 1953 production of Swan Lake which restored Tchaikovsky's music to its original order. One of the major revisions was that he reinterpreted all the national dances in Act III as part of the evil Rothbart's spell, which greatly heightened the dramatic impact of the scene.

In 1960, the Paris Opera presented this version for its premiere of Swan Lake. It is also an important part of the repertoire of La Scala Theatre Ballet in Milan.
